Improving Students' Speaking Ability By Using Picture Series For The Eighth Grade Students At MTs Darul Ulum Budi Agung Medan

This study aims to improve the speaking ability of eighth-grade students at MTs
Darul Ulum Budi Agung Medan through the use of picture series media in teaching
procedural texts. The research employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR)
method using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles, each
consisting of the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The
subjects of the study were 35 students of class VIII-2 in the 2024/2025 academic
year. Data were collected through speaking tests (pre-test, post-test I, and post-test
II), observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed a
significant improvement in students’ speaking ability, covering aspects of grammar,
vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. In the pre-test, only a small
number of students achieved the Minimum Mastery Criterion (≥75). After
implementing learning using picture series in cycle I, the Minimum Mastery Criteria
improved, and a greater improvement was observed in cycle II. The use of picture
series created a more engaging and interactive learning atmosphere, encouraged
active participation, reduced students’ shyness, and boosted their confidence in
speaking English. The study concludes that picture series are an effective medium for
improving students’ speaking ability, particularly in learning procedural texts. It is
recommended that English teachers utilize picture series in speaking activities to
foster students’ motivation, creativity, and active involvement.
