Improving Students’ Skill In Writing Essay By Using Substitution Drills In Simple Present Tense At The Eight Grades Of SMP PAB 2 Helvetia
This research was conducted to improve the students’ skill in writing essays by applying
substitution drills in simple present tense at the eighth grade of SMP PAB 2 Helvetia. The
background of this study was based on the students’ difficulties in constructing sentences and
developing ideas in essay writing, especially in using correct grammar structures.The objective
of the research was to find out whether the use of substitution drills could improve the students’
ability in writing essays. This study applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was
carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection.
The subjects of this research were 30 students of the eighth grade in the academic year [insert
year]. The instruments of the research were writing tests, observation sheets, and field
notes.The findings showed that students’ writing skills improved significantly after the
implementation of substitution drills. In the first cycle, the students’ average score was [insert
result], and it increased to [insert result] in the second cycle. The improvement covered aspects
of grammar accuracy, sentence structure, vocabulary use, and coherence in writing essays.It
can be concluded that the application of substitution drills in simple present tense effectively
improved the students’ skill in writing essays at the eighth grade of SMP PAB 2 Helvetia.
Therefore, substitution drills are recommended as one of the effective techniques to enhance
students’ writing performance.
